The problem
Brightwater’s existing Umbraco website was running on a no longer supported version of Umbraco (Umbraco 7). Along with security concerns, the CMS had accumulated layers of updates and quick fixes, resulting in a clunky and slow experience.
The large number of unnecessary and outdated page components had become cumbersome for the content editors.
Our solution
Lemonade suggested migrating the website onto the latest LTS (Long-Term Supported) version of Umbraco. This migration, coupled with ensuring that the website is upgraded when Umbraco releases patches and new minor versions as they become available, will ensure that the website can live and breathe well into the future.
In regards to the copious amounts of components the content editors had to deal with, we consolidated this down to a more manageable number to make it easier for Brightwater to build pages at a faster pace.
How we helped
Migrating to the latest version of Umbraco was a significant undertaking for our team, but with Lemonade’s support throughout the process, it was a smooth and manageable transition. Their expertise was evident as they not only understood the technical requirements but also prioritised the experience of our website visitors and the internal needs of our content team. Their thoughtful approach ensured our website remained familiar and user-friendly, whilst also making the backend far more efficient for our editors.

Ensuring organic search performance remains stable
A website migration is all about ensuring that you dot the I’s and cross the T’s. Failing to be meticulous in the planning of a website migration can trigger a big drop in traffic, rankings and user trust.
Keyword research, content mapping and redirects are but a few major aspects to get right. Luckily, organic search is our jam, and we have rigorous processes and checklists when it comes to a website migration.

One of the aspects we valued most was Lemonade’s ability to balance practicality with change. Rather than rebuilding everything from scratch, they focused on updates that enhanced security, improved functionality, and made subtle but meaningful improvements to the user experience. Their attention to detail meant our SEO foundations remained intact, and their recommendations helped us avoid the common pitfalls that can come with a major migration.

How we made the process seamless
This seamless transition was made possible by hosting the new website backend on a staging website where we could migrate the content and test the durability of the new website. Once we were ready, we could simply ‘swap’ the live website with the staging website.
From an end-user's perspective, not a lot changed. The website looks exactly the same, just a lot faster.
From the content editors perspective, they now have a robust and intuitive editing experience where they can create pages as they wish using a fresh suite of components.
Ultimately the client can be rest assured that their investment now has the latest security features and is built on a robust content management system that will see them well into the future.

Lemonade’s guidance and collaborative approach ensured the upgrade felt far less daunting than we anticipated. There was minimal disruption to our organisation, and our digital presence remained strong throughout the process. Their support gave us confidence at every step, and the result is a more modern, secure, and user-friendly website that meets both the needs of our audience and our team.
