The problem

Brightwater’s existing Umbraco website was running on a no longer supported version of Umbraco (Umbraco 7). Not only were there obvious security concerns, but the CMS had been passed around from agency to agency, causing it to become clunky and slow.

An additional headache for content editors were the countless number of unnecessary components that they could build a page with.

Our solution

Lemonade suggested migrating the website onto the latest LTS (Long-Term Supported) version of Umbraco. This migration, coupled with ensuring that the website is upgraded when Umbraco releases patches and new minor versions as they become available, will ensure that the website can live and breathe well into the future.

In regards to the copious amounts of components the content editors had to deal with, we consolidated this down to a more manageable number to make it easier for Brightwater to build pages at a faster pace.

Ensuring organic search performance remains stable

A website migration is all about ensuring that you dot the I’s and cross the T’s. Failing to be meticulous in the planning of a website migration can trigger a big drop in traffic, rankings and user trust.

Keyword research, content mapping and redirects are but a few major aspects to get right. Luckily, organic search is our jam, and we have rigorous processes and checklists when it comes to a website migration.

How we made the process seamless

This seamless transition was made possible by hosting the new website backend on a staging website where we could migrate the content and test the durability of the new website. Once we were ready, we could simply ‘swap’ the live website with the staging website.

From an end-user's perspective, not a lot changed. The website looks exactly the same, just a lot faster.

From the content editors perspective, they now have a robust and intuitive editing experience where they can create pages as they wish using a fresh suite of components.

Ultimately the client can be rest assured that their investment now has the latest security features and is built on a robust content management system that will see them well into the future.
